Santa Ana Zegache - Socioeconomic & Cultural Issues

40 minutes from the city of Oaxaca, Santa Ana Zegache is an agricultural town of 2000. Its people make their living working the often-unforgiving land, by finding jobs in the city or, most often, from the money sent home by relatives who have been forced to immigrate north.

In recent years, Zegache has become a town of almost exclusively children, women and the elderly. Today, entire families risk their lives crossing the border into the U.S., in pursuit of a better life on the "other side".

Thanks to the efforts of those involved in the project, the church and its art works have become a real source of pride for Zegache's inhabitants.

The cultural, historic and aesthetic wealth of the town – always there beneath the surface – is now being turned into something of real and lasting value.
